Basic Pitch Shot Distance Control
Basic Pitch Shot Distance Control is an essential part of any golfer’s game, especially if you’re looking to score below 80. And being able to control the distances of all your wedges is essential as well.
Many high-handicap golfers attempt to control the distance of their pitch shots by controlling their downswing. Wrong! When you do this, you are “decelerating” the golf club and you’ll never decelerate the club the same way twice. How should you learn to control the distances your pitch shots carry? By grooving one pitch shot swing and then using the various clubs in your bag to adjust for a particular distance.
Here’s an example. Let’s imagine you have a simple and repeatable swing with a 60° wedge that travels 50 yards. But if you swing harder than your simple swing, that club could go further, but not consistently. What if you made the same simple and repeatable swing and used a 56° wedge instead? 99 times out of 100, the distance that club carries will be about 8-10 yards further that the 60°. Try the 52° with the same swing. Chance are in your favor that club makes the ball carry 8-10 yards further than the 56° wedge. Get the picture?
What are some of the other ways you can adjust the carry distance of your wedge shots? There are various items you can adjust, such as ball position, your hand position on the handle, weight distribution to your front leg, how open your stance may be, how open you hold the club, along with a couple other variables. For these adjustments to work properly, you have to understand that when you adjust one variable, there is an equal and opposite reaction to one of the other variables. And based upon your lie conditions, the equal and opposite reaction is not always to same set up variable. Therefore, having a full understanding of a Basic Pitch Shot Distance Control method that allows you to swing freely, regardless of lie condition or variable used, is an essential part of any great player’s arsenal.
