Basic Putting Set-Up
Basic Putting Set-Up
Learning the basic putting set-up positions and priorities is a must if you’d like to improve your putting skills. Most golfers who shoot between 90 and 100 average over 39 putts per round. That’s a lot of putts considering you’re probably not hitting a lot of greens in regulation as well as missing a lot of fairways. Averaging over 2 putts per hole is insuring you can do no better than bogie for any hole. That’s not fun golf and that’s not the putting skills that allow you to score your best, no matter the other statistics.
What are the Basic Putting Set-Up Positions?
The simple yet commonly overlooked basic putting set-up start with how you set yourself up to putt. Remember, the more moving parts to any swing, the more difficult it is to time things out. With putting requiring the most accuracy, there’s no need for a weight transfer or rotation of the lower body. So anchoring yourself into your front leg with about 65% of your body weight is a good start. This solidifies the lower body and should prevent any unnecessary sway or rotation in your putting stroke.
Keeping your eyes slightly inside or dead over the top of the ball is another basic putting set-up position needed to insure you’re seeing the line of the putt correctly when addressing the ball. If your eyes are too far inside the ball, you’ll miss read your putts to the right. If your eyes are too far over the ball, then you’ll see the hole left of where it actually is.
And ball position is a must to insure the putter hits the ball dead in the middle of the club face, and not off to the toe or heel. Being able to set up the ball just a split hair of the middle to the front of the stand allows this to happen.
What about the Basic Putting Set-Up Priorities?
There’s 3 priorities to putting. Hitting the middle of the putter face each time, so you can control your distance with every putt. If you can accomplish those 2 items in order, the third priority is aim. If you can’t control your distances, you’ll have a hard time picking out a consistent place to aim each putt, based upon how high or how low you expect the “apex” of the putt to be.
Tell me More About Putting Basics
There’s a lot more to putting than most people think. The simple act of rolling a ball into a 4.5″ inch hole can sometimes be a very difficult task. But if you get into a consistent routine that allows you to consistently set-up properly using the basics of putting set-up to all your putts, chances are you’ll reduce the number of putts you make in a round. And in turn, reduce your scores.
